SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Why Sponsor Scholarships Through Dollars for Scholars?
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Students must complete and submit a scholarship application to be eligible for scholarships. The Scholarship Committee consists of a Moderator (non-scoring), 2-Dollars for Scholars Board Members, 1-Teacher/Faculty Member, and 2-Community Members. To keep the process impartial, the applications are numbered and the student's name is anonymous to the committee members that score the applications.

 Endowed "Named" Scholarships
A substantial donation is given at one time. Additional money may be given on an annual basis. Normally the interest earned is used as the scholarship amount, dependant upon the contributor's request. HMB seniors of the current school year are eligible. A completed application form must be submitted and the recipient is chosen by the contributor or by D/S.
Stewart R. Matthews Memorial Scholarship.

"Named" Scholarships
A donation is given annually and the recipient may need to meet a certain criteria specified by the contributor. The recipient is chosen by the contributor or by D/S. .

Memorial Scholarships
Funds are placed in the general fund or the permanent fund, depending upon the amount of the donation. HMB seniors of the current school year are eligible. A completed application form must be submitted. The recipient is chosen by the contributor or by D/S.
"Pass Through" Scholarships
A donation is given annually. The recipient must meet a certain criteria specified by the contributor. The recipient is chosen by the contributor.

HMB Area Dollars for Scholars Permanent Fund
Endowments are placed in the permanent fund. The donated funds are invested by HMB Area Dollars for Scholars and when the interest has reached an amount necessary to provide an award, a scholarship is awarded on behalf of the contributor.
HMB Area Dollars for Scholars Scholarships
HMB seniors of the current school year are eligible for scholarships. A completed application form must be submitted. Recipient is chosen by D/S.
HMB Area Dollars for Scholars Alumni Scholarships
HMB Alumni are eligible for scholarships. A completed application form must be submitted. The recipient is chosen by D/S.

 We'd like you to get to know a little more about the people in which the scholarships have been named:
CARI BAILEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Cari Bailey Scholarship was established in 1999. Cari worked at Med Center One and on her way home from work on February 2, 1999, was killed by a drunk driver. Cari was a 1997 HMB graduate and was attending Bismarck State College with a scholarship to Med Center One School of Nursing. Cari was the daughter of Bruce and Laurie Bailey and sister of Erin and Beau Bailey of Moffit, ND.
NEIL BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Neil Baker established a scholarship in his name in 1999. Neil died at the age of 86 on August 21, 2001. Neil was born on January 24, 1915, the son of Myron S & Jessie E (Perry) Baker. Neil married Jenny Adams in June 1964. He farmed all is life, staying on the farm until his health made it impossible to do the work. He moved to Hazelton in 1995. His winter hobby was woodworking, making many useful things.
BANK OF HAZELTON SCHOLARSHIP
The Bank of Hazelton has served the community since 1903 as an independent community bank. In its continuous effort to support the community, the bank offers scholarships for HMB students who are furthering their education beyond high school.
HAZELTON FARMERS UNION OIL & AGRONOMY
The Hazelton Farmers Union Oil & Agronomy Center is guided by the principles of cooperation, legislation and education. It is an organization committed to the prosperity of family farms, ranches and rural communities. By giving out scholarships to those students pursuing a career in agriculture, Hazelton Farmers Union helps provide the funds for higher education for our HMB students.
HAZELTON LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
The Hazelton Lions Club was formed in Hazelton in 1962 through the efforts of Bert Olson. The Lions Club was organized with the purpose to work for the betterment of the Hazelton community and to support its youth. The core belief of the club is "Community is what we make it." The Hazelton Lions Club continues to make a great impact on our community as it offers scholarships for HMB students.
STEWART R. MATTHEWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Stewart R. Matthews Scholarship was established in 2007. Stewart was born and raised in the Hazelton area, graduated from Hazelton High School in 1934 and moved to Minnesota in 1936. He worked in the Forestry Department from 1945 to 1980. Stewart passed away in June 2005 and bequeathed a generous amount of money to HMB Area Dollars for Scholars. Stewart established this scholarship for students furthering their education at a two-year or four-year college or university. He wanted the scholarship to be available to students that have been active in community, church, school activities, and maintained at least a "B" average. His bequest shall become a perpetual fund with the income being used for annual scholarships. Marv Matthews, son of Stewart, spoke at the 2007 graduation and announced the first recipient of his father's scholarship.
MIKE MASTEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Mike Mastel Scholarship was established in 2009. Mike Mastel was a 1975 graduate from Hazelton High School. Mike was born on June 12, 1957 in Linton, the son of George and Anna Mary (Rohrich) Mastel. Mike took over his father's trucking business after his father's retirement in 1979. Mary Jo Keller became Mike's wife in 1982. Mike and Mary Jo and their 3 sons, Matt, Mason, and Michael Jr., made their home in Hazelton where they ran their trucking business. Mike enjoyed fishing, skiing, golfing, traveling and riding motorcycle, camping and spending time at his cabin on Lake Oahe. Mike died on March 31, 2008. Mike and Mary Jo have always been supportive of HMB Area Dollars for Scholars. By establishing this memorial, in Mike's name, Mary Jo and her sons continue to show their support and generosity to the community as Mike always did. Mike made a huge impact on everyone he met and he will always be missed but not forgotten.
JODI JAHNER-MOSSET MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Jodi Jahner-Mosset of Linton, ND, at the age of 33, died of complications, due to Cystic Fibrosis, on September 6, 1999. Jodi had such an impact on everyone she met, especially her classmates. Jodi's classmates, (Linton's graduating class of 1984) organize and execute an annual golf tournament in her name, held at Linton's Golf Course on the 2nd Saturday in June. Proceeds from the tournament go toward the Jodi Jahner-Mosset Memorial Scholarship, which is presented annually to students at Linton and Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock High Schools. Proceeds also go toward the Emmons County Sports Alumni Association Scholarship, which is awarded annually, to alumni of the Strasburg High School.
MARY LANE OF MOFFIT SCHOLARSHIP
Mary and her husband Bill raised cattle and farmed in rural Moffit. Mary was very active in Farmer's Union and the legislature where she continues to keep up-to-date on legislative issues, paying special attention to education. Mary was an elementary teacher prior to her marriage to Bill. Mary is very involved with the United Methodist Church and is a strong believer in Christianity, education, and the future of our country. Mary pays special attention to our H-M-B youth and their activities and accomplishments. She provides a scholarship to help alleviate some of the financial pressure on our students as they enter secondary education.
GERIT WENTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Gerit Wentz scholarship was established in 1994 when he died in a car accident on December 1, 1993, at the age of 20. Gerit was the son of the Delores and the late Gordon Wentz and the brother to Grant and Galyn. Gerit was attending Dickinson College at the time of his death. Scholarships were given out from 1994-1997.
