NORTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL RODEO
Posted August 2008 -------------------- SAMANTHA FETTIG RODEO UPDATE Samantha Fettig has a rodeo on August 24th at Centennial Park on the strip in Mandan. It starts at 10:00. If anyone would be interested in seeing her perform this is the only rodeo close to us until next spring. The schedule of events and run times will be posted about August 17th on ND High School Rodeo Assoc
RECAP of NATIONAL RODEO: It was quite the experience for Samantha and her mom and dad (Tony & Arleen) going to National High School Rodeo in New Mexico. It was a long haul, a complete different atmosphere, a big area, a huge crowd, and a dust storm! Out of 180 contestants Sam finished 58th on her first run of barrel racing. On her second run her hat fell off when she entered the arena and she got a 5 second penalty which dropped her down to 138th place (at least she didn't tip a barrel). Sam's parents are so proud of her. When Sam was a Freshman, she asked her parents if she could participate in High School Rodeo. Since she didn't have a horse she wasn't able to participate. Tony & Arleen decided to get her an affordable horse just to make her happy! Never in their dreams did they think she would make it to Nationals. Sam and Snap learned the skills of barrels and poles together. Sam puts in a lot of time keeping her horse in shape which becomes difficult when she's involved with school, volleyball, and basketball. Sam loves her horse and competing. Sam's goal for next season (which begins in August 24, 2008) is to go to State again in barrels and poles, but to take 1st in barrels and win a saddle and place higher in poles. Then onward to Nationals again. Tony, Arleen, and Sam want to thank everyone for their support and donation. It helped them immensely, especially with the fuel prices.
Posted July 2008 -------------------- SAMANTHA FETTIG QUALIFIES TO COMPETE AT WORLD'S LARGEST RODEO

Posted June 2008 -------------------- Samantha Fettig, HMB senior (Fall of 2008) and her horse Snap are heading to State in High School Rodeo. They compete in barrel racing and pole bending events. State is held June 12-15 in Bowman, North Dakota. The top 24 contestants qualify for State.
In barrel racing, Samantha and Snap are in 3rd place out of 75 contestants. In pole bending, they are sitting 23rd out of 65. The top four contestants in each event go to Nationals at Fairmont, New Mexico. Good Luck Sam and Snap!
Barrel racing and pole bending are timed rodeo events, where the fastest time is what matters most. Cowgirls compete in the arena against each other and the clock. Barrel racing and pole bending is about cooperation between horse and rider. Because of the competition and money involved, finding a good horse is very important to the competitors. A top of the line barrel horse can cost up to $50,000. For the barrel racing event, the arena is cleared and three barrels are set up at different marked locations. The riders then enter the arena at full speed, quickly rounding each barrel in a cloverleaf pattern and then exiting where they entered. A stopwatch or timer is used registering down to a hundredth of a second. For the pole bending event, the horse and rider run the length of a line of six upright poles, turn sharply and weave through the poles, turn again and weave back, then return to the start. This could be compared to the Slalom skiing. Rodeo contestant abide by a very strict dress code. These rules must be followed or contestants are disqualified. • Contestants must wear western attire at all times during a performance and in any seating area whether competing or not: *western hat *long sleeved shirt (must be wrist length sleeved shirt, with collar and cuffs. No sweat shirts, Tshirts or pullover sweaters allowed) *western boots, and western trousers. • Contestants must wear numbers on their backs and number must be visible at all times while competing in their events, when at rodeo or rodeo grounds or any rodeo function and at the motel. • All Contestants must have shirttails tucked in at start of their competition • While competing, the rider must begin with their hat on. If it comes off during the event, the hat must stay in the arena. If the hat blows out of the area, the contestant is disqualified.
